SENIORS ARE SWINDLED OUT OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS EVERY YEAR WITH NEW SCAMS ON THE RISE TARGETING OLDER AMERICANS
The Florida Department of Financial Services is undertaking an active role to address, minimize and eliminate this epidemic trend. To curb the exploitation of seniors, Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater presents an open forum called Operation S.A.F.E – Stop Adult Financial Exploitation, a Free workshop for local seniors, their families and caregivers.
In recognition of Older Americans Month for the month of May, the event will be attended by Senior Citizens Services of Clearwater as a local liaison and referral resource for seniors. The “Be Scam Smart” workshop addresses methods to assure that savings are protected as methods and techniques used by scam artists are revealed.
The workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 14, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at Clearwater’s Aging Well Center, 1501 North Belcher Road, the Long Center, Clearwater, Florida 33765.

As part of CFO Atwater’s “On Guard for Seniors” Initiative, Operation S.A.F.E is designed to inform, empower and protect Florida’s seniors from financial scams and fraud. During the workshop participants will learn about The Psychology of a Scam, How to Spot Fraudulent Behavior, Common Scams that Target Seniors, How to Fight Identity Theft and Resources to Keep you Safe.
Senior Citizens Services of Clearwater will be on site in partnership with Clearwater ‘s Aging Well Center to support the efforts and goals of the Florida Department of Financial Services to protect and serve senior citizens of Southwest
Florida. SCS is a not for profit organization long recognized for its tireless advocacy and action for the senior community providing exceptional quality of life forums, classes, computer education, activities, services, housing and transportation referrals and services.
